If you have heavy, damp clay soil, Masterwort (*Astrantia major*) should be at the top of your planting list. While many perennials rot in wet winter clay, Astrantia thrives, using the moisture to produce beautiful, intricate flowers from summer into autumn.
Its flowers resemble pincushions, surrounded by a collar of papery, star-like bracts that look like delicate illustrations. It grows best in partial shade but handles full sun if the soil stays damp. It is highly attractive to bees and makes an excellent cut flower, lasting for weeks in a vase.
