Growing Spearmint Without It Taking Over Your Garden

Spearmint (*Mentha spicata*) is a culinary must-have, perfect for summer drinks, teas, and potato dishes. However, mint is also a notorious garden invader. It spreads via aggressive underground runners (stolons) that can quickly choke out neighboring plants and colonize entire borders.

To enjoy fresh mint without the headaches, containment is key. Always grow mint in a container. If you want it in the ground, bury a deep pot or bucket directly into the soil, leaving the rim 2 inches above the surface to prevent the runners from escaping over the top. This keeps the roots confined while allowing the plant to blend seamlessly into your herb bed.
