For decades, peat moss has been the gold standard for container gardening. It is lightweight, holds moisture, and is cheap to harvest. However, the ecological cost of extracting peat is devastating. Peatlands cover only 3% of the earth’s land area but store twice as much carbon as all the world’s forests combined. When bogs are drained and harvested, they release huge amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
At Crann Grá, we are committed to keeping bogs in the ground. We grow all of our plants in premium, peat-free compost mixes made from wood fiber, coir (coconut husk), and composted bark. These materials provide excellent aeration and root development without destroying Ireland’s natural heritage. Going peat-free is one of the most positive choices any gardener can make for the planet.
