Bergenia cordifolia, commonly known as Elephant’s Ears, is a tough, reliable plant. It features large, rounded, leathery glossy leaves that form dense groundcover, turning bronze-red in winter. In early spring, thick stems with clusters of deep pink bell flowers emerge.
It grows in almost any position, from full sun to deep shade, and handles heavy clay and dry shade. Its thick leaves suppress weeds, making it excellent for low-maintenance borders and banks. Combine it with fine-textured ferns and grasses to create a striking foliage contrast.
