A Guide to Growing Wild Irish Foxgloves

The Wild Irish Foxglove (*Digitalis purpurea*) is one of our most striking native wildflowers. In summer, its tall spikes packed with pink and purple spotted bells line our hedgerows and woodland edges, acting as a magnet for long-tongued bumblebees.

Foxgloves are biennials, meaning they grow leaves in their first year, flower and set seed in their second year, and then die. They are incredibly easy to grow, thriving in partial shade and tolerating heavy clay soils. They will self-seed freely, meaning once you introduce them to your garden, you will have a natural, self-sustaining display year after year. Note that all parts of the plant are highly toxic, so handle with care.
