English Lavender (*Lavandula angustifolia*) is famous for its fragrant foliage and purple flower spikes. However, lavender is native to the dry Mediterranean and hates “wet feet.” In clay-heavy regions like Leitrim, planting lavender directly in the soil often leads to root rot.
To grow lavender successfully, drainage is key. Plant it in raised beds, on banks, or in containers where water drains away quickly. When planting, dig a deep hole and mix in plenty of coarse grit or gravel to open up the soil. Plant it in full sun, and prune it back after flowering to keep it compact and prevent woody growth.
