The English Bluebell (*Hyacinthoides non-scripta*) is a classic spring flower. In May, they turn woodlands into carpets of blue. You can replicate this display by planting them under trees, deciduous shrubs, or along shaded banks.
Unlike Spanish bluebells, native English bluebells have nodding flowers that hang on one side of an arching stem, and they are fragrant. They grow from small white bulbs that should be planted in autumn in dappled shade. They love leaf-rich, moisture-retentive soil and will naturalize over time, spreading to form a woodland carpet.
