Ferns are often overlooked in garden design because they lack showy flowers. However, their architectural structure, diverse textures, and shades of green make them highly valuable design elements, especially in shaded layouts.
Use upright ferns like *Polystichum setiferum* (Soft Shield Fern) as focal points in shade beds. Plant low, carpeting ferns like *Blechnum spicant* (Hard Fern) to cover ground and soften path edges. Combine them with large-leaved hostas and foamflowers to create height and texture contrasts. In winter, many ferns stay evergreen, providing essential structure when other plants have died back.
