At Crann Grá, we do not own heated greenhouses. All of our propagation and growing is done in unheated polytunnels or out in the open elements. This is a deliberate choice that results in stronger, healthier plants.
When plants are raised in heated, humid greenhouses, they grow rapidly but produce soft, watery cell walls. When planted out in a windy, damp Leitrim garden, they experience severe shock and often fail. In contrast, our unheated plants grow at a natural pace. They experience local cold, wind, and rain, which triggers them to build thick, strong cell walls and dense root systems. When you plant them, they establish quickly and handle our weather without checking.
