The Wonders of Yarrow: Medicine, Pollinators, and Soil

Yarrow (*Achillea millefolium*) is a native Irish wildflower that deserves a spot in every garden. With its feathery, aromatic leaves and flat heads of tiny white and pink flowers, it is a beautiful plant that blooms for months. But yarrow is also an ecological workhorse.

Yarrow is a dynamic accumulator, pulling minerals from deep in the soil with its deep root system. When the leaves die back or are composted, they return these nutrients to the surface soil. In addition, its flat flower heads are a landing pad for beneficial insects, including hoverflies, ladybirds, and parasitic wasps, which act as natural pest controllers in the garden. It is tough, drought-resistant, and thrives in poor soils.
